October 2004
The Huon Valley Council approves our building plans for the house and a 9m x 6m car port
November 2004
Our house in Townsville is sold. We buy a shipping container, send all our belongings by rail to Tasmania and drive our van down South.
December 2004

We arrive at Abels Bay! Our container is here, too. We buy a second container for more storage, build a dog kennel, and receive delivery of two 9000 litre water tanks. The dirt track is a problem, though.

We hire a 3m x 6m relocatable building and build a 6m x 9m carport for rainwater collection and shelter.

Temporary toilet and shower:
a 150ltr hot water system provides water for the shower; the toilet is a composting toilet (Ecolet XL automatic). Only grey water is pumped to a septic tank and treated in absorption trenches over which we will plant apple trees this winter. Both toilet and hot water system will later be used in the house.

A dividing wall separates the bedroom from the kitchen. Visitors are always welcome, but have to sleep on the floor.

The natural clay turns into bulldust when dry or sticky goo when wet. We have a local contractor build an all weather road using proper road base materials.

Because you can't plant directly into clay soil, we start early building up topsoil in the future vegie garden
